Techically you can complete this the first stage of the quest with your friend but aspects don't seem to sync well, you end up seeing your friend naked instead of transformed into an actual wolf, and books may not appear in merchant's inventory complicating completition of the quest also enemies might duplicate.

Seems like the damage you do as an aspect syncs, including shouts.

Overall: Quest stages may get a little bugged and hard to progress. Transformation looks like your friend got frenzy, throwed all of his clothed and bites your enemies with his teeth with static animation. It's fine if you decide to split up for a while with your friend and use on your own when your friend isn't around to avoid so called immersion breaking which isn't around anyway. Frost aspect might still be good for traveling.

Another problem is that if the character dies while transofrmed the spell that tranformed him unequips and you get stuck in beast form, to prevent this you have to use the spell just before you die.
