It actually works. Reason why it might fail is because user is required to restart the application to see the changes (This is a flaw inherited from AB3). User has to go to the preferences tab for now to ascertain the path specified by p/[d]. This should have been a low severity documentation bug (failed to specify in the documentation). Severity shouldn't be high since user still has two other export options available for them and this preferences.json configuration just gives the user more flexibility in exporting.

however export p/[d] still exports photos to the export folder in the jar directory
