Py 3.12 compatibility #12

Hi @timstaley, thanks for the great work here.

We (software developers from the ACADA control software of the CTAO project) noticed that this package is not compatible with more modern Python versions, like e.g. 3.12.

Are you planning to work on this in the near future? If not, would you be willing to accept a PR in this context?

Thanks for the interest! Good to know this is still of use.

I'm very happy to accept PR's but to be honest I suspect the repo could use a more engaged maintainer, if you'd like to adopt some ownership?

Alternatively I have been intending for some time to see if anyone in the astropy community would be interested, as an alternative route to avoiding code rot.

No problem, I'll check with my team and manager if we can take over some of the maintenance work for this in CTAO. Will come back to you in a couple of days in this context.
