Our wording in regards to “Close” and “Cancel” buttons in dialogs is currently all over the place. E.g.:
In the Virtual Media dialog, we say “Close”, which closes the dialog.
In the Shutdown dialog, we say “Cancel”, which closes the dialog.
In the Security dialog, before disabling authentication, we say “Cancel”, which takes you back to the initial Security dialog state.
In the Virtual Media dialog, when uploading a disk image via URL, we say “Back”, which takes you back to the initial Virtual Media dialog state.
In the Update dialog, when the update process has finished, we say “OK”, which closes the dialog.
The main problem are the “Cancel” buttons, because it’s not predictable how they will behave, i.e., whether they will close the dialog or keep it open. It would also be good to resolve the inconsistencies around the “Back” and “OK” labels.
I think we should come up with a rule for these buttons, document that in the style guide, and then roll it out across our entire UI.
