missing save confirmation on exit #143

It seems that when a notebook has been modified the associated buffer is not marked as such and if I exit emacs in that condition then the changes are lost. With other buffers it happens that I'm asked to whether save or not before emacs is gone. Is it there some setting I'm missing to enable?
