Because the merge conflicts were too big to resolve in the browser, I pulled a copy of this branch and merged it locally with my main, then pushed those changes to main directly. We're probably not supposed to do it like that but it was the easiest option. Those changes also included a few bugfixes + the necessary changes to the buildspec and other files to make this compile properly on AWS

NOTE FOR THE TEACHING TEAM: almost all of the changes in here were written by Devesh and Rebecca. It's probably gonna show it as being my code because I'm pushing the changes to main, so I want to clarify who should recieve credit for it
