GPS issues #70

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install GPS Status (or any app that requires a lock)
2. Attempt to get a lock.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
-Expected output: GPS lock within a reasonable amount of time (~less than 1
hour). No GPS lock results

What version of the product are you using?
-BR2

Have you performed a full wipe/factory reset? (If not, then do so)
- Yes.

Inspire4G or DesireHD? (If Inspire, did you flash Inspiremod?)
- Inspire with Inspiremod

Please provide logcat ouput and any additional information below.
(logs required or I will discard the ticket.)
- I also tried using existz's RIL then reflashed the rom, but no dice.
- Also tried the AGPS patch on XDA; didn't work either.
- I thought it was a hardware problem for a while, but found that the
connectors are still solid and no sign of corrosion.
- My radio is 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M. RIL is: HTC-RIL 2.2.0160HM

This is what I get from GPS Status. Location icon blinks but no lock.

I don't have a paid version of GPS Status btw. Somehow I don't see any ads in
the app. Could that be connected to its inability to lock?

I am having the exact same issue as OP. I have an Inspire with Inspiremod and I
have tried the AGPS patch with no luck.

If it helps it is a fresh flash from the stock HTC ROM. I formatted before
flashing. The GPS hasn't worked since I flashed this ROM, it did work on the
stock one. Even rebooting the phone or switching it on an off from the
notification bar does not fix the locking issue (as some people have suggested).

Baseband: 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M
Kernel version: 2.6.35.14-aospX-creamed_coconutroot@hp-linux #1
Build: IMM76I

I just tried the GPS Status and had the same result, I would like to point out
that I was using the stock Google Maps app when I noticed the issue, it
consistantly says "your current location is temporarily unavailable"

Also I noticed your using a different RIL, quoted from the first post.."HTC-RIL
2.2.0160HM" ... Try using with the roms stock RIL, AOSP HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G.., as
its the only AOSP RIL. Users have posted various issues when using any other
RIL, from no service to no GPS..etc. Im not sure how well a Sense RIL will work
on an AOSP rom.

AOSP is not like Sense where you have to flash the matching RIL. The AOSP
2.2.0018G should be the only one used.

I started out with 2.2.0018G back in BR1 and still had no GPS lock. I moved to
2.2.0160 because it seemed to get better indoor/wifi reception (probably in my
head). I just reflashed 2.2.0018G and left my phone pointing at the sky on my
balcony. I'll let y'all know how it works out.

Make sure to give it a few tries, at first mine wouldnt lock but after about
3-4 tries it locked and now its pretty much instant. Theres also been a few
other reports where first lock took a little bit, but once it locked it was
fine after that.

no.da -- I had the same problem (including the screen from "GPS status", thanks
for precise report!!!).

I fixed it by installing radio 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M (with RCDATA). My
radio version before that started with 12.39... (with big GPS problems).
trenton's radio started with 12.56... After updating, as existz mentioned, give
it a little time after update!

Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16598875&postcount=2

After my first install, the baseband version in Settings -> "About phone" was
reported as "unknown". I flashed again and now it's known as
"12.59.60.26U_26.11.04.21_M". Note 'U' instead of 'M'. Don't know what that
means.

existz reports his radio as 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M -- with a 'P'!

In my case, the RIL (as reported by adb shell getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl) is:

  HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G (Mar 24 2011,20:20:09)

existz himself reports his version is 'HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G AOSP'. I don't know
what suffix AOSP means.

As aospx is getting hotter and hotter, would it be an idea to direct folks to
an image with working radio + ril combo (+ inspiremod) if that can be done?

Sudden

I've had 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M (with RC data)from the beginning. I
reflashed it along with the AOSP RIL when I updated to BR3. The radio turned to
12.59.60.26U_26.11.04.21_M at my latest reflash. I don't think there's a big
difference between the U and P designations. Someone told me 'U' refers to the
USA (where I am) and P is for everywhere else? I don't really know.

But still no GPS lock. I'll give it another day or so since I haven't had a
decent chance to let it run.

All i done was went into Maps and just kept hitting the little gps icon to find
my location over and over until it finally locked my location. Once it finally
found my location its locking on instantly using GPS Test from the Market.. I
get 8-10 sats instantly. So keep making it try to find your location instead of
just letting it set there...Its worth trying. But as far as GPS goes, nothings
been changed since the very first version of aospX (AR1).

Reporting back with no success. I let it run my battery empty.

Google Maps + data will get me an estimated location from the cell phone towers
but no GPS lock. The icon doesn't even blink anymore; not in GPS Status or in
Google Maps.

I had to reflash the rom after flashing the AOSP RIL killed my data reception.
Data works fine now though. Didn't help GPS lock.

Still going to let it run whenever I can, but not expecting anything. It's
definitely not hardware (unless there's something other than the antenna that's
broken). I can't find a software problem. My gps.conf file points to the right
servers.

Try using FasterFix from the market and see if that helps. Also i dont think
the GPS icon flashes in the status bar like it did on gingerbread, on ics i
believe it just stays solid. It should only pop up in the status bar when gps
is being used, when its not it will disappear...But it should just show the gps
icon with the dot in the middle.

But as i mentioned earlier, nothing GPS related has been changed since very
first version of this rom back in Jan/Feb. So i dont know how some have issues,
and others dont. Mine just took awhile the first lock, which i had to make it
keep searching over and over instead of just letting it lock on its own,
otherwise it would just sit there.

If no.da and pyc both are in the US, perhaps that's pertinent? I would think
that 'inspire-mode' has to be reflashed after each ROM update-- I quote from
its script:

  /system/xbin/sed -i 's/Desire HD/Inspire 4G/g' /system/build.prop
  /system/xbin/sed -i 's/ro.com.google.clientidbase=android-google/ro.com.google.clientidbase=android-att-us/g' /system/build.prop
  /system/xbin/echo "ro.ril.att.feature=1" >> /system/build.prop
  /system/xbin/echo "ro.com.google.clientidbase.am=android-att-us" >> /system/build.prop

It also overwrites /system/etc/gps.conf

No effect with FasterFix. My gps.conf file is exactly as it was before (I
remembered to give FasterFix root access). I never forget to flash inspiremod
with every update.

I did notice something weird about my GPS icon. I can make the icon on the top
left start to blink by taking a screenshot (hold power button -> screenshot).
It happens in GPS Status and in Google Maps.

If I rotate my phone in GPS Status, or make the screen change in any way, the
icon stops blinking altogether. If I take another screenshot, the blinking
resumes.

I can't make a video right now, but compare the screenshot here to the first
one I took at the beginning of the thread. There's no solid dot in the middle.
It stays that way until I take a screenshot at which point it starts blinking
and the solid dot appears. Maybe it means something? I'm grasping at straws
now.

I'm also attaching a screenshot of my gps.conf file. I borrowed a friend's
Samsung Galaxy tab and his gps.conf file looks like this too.

I also want to thank you all for being so patient in trying to help me out!

Hi s.imph, I'm from Israel and I have DHD. In the AR31 version the GPS was
locked wery fine, but after I've upgraded it to last ROM ver. BR3 the GPS
doesn't lock anything. I've tried rollback it to the AR31 and I even installed
IceColdSandwich - 8.2 - AOKP | SUMMER EDITION ROM, but all these steps didn't
helped to resolve this issue. :o(
I'll try to run FasterFix and I'll let you know.

Would someone with functioning GPS mind posting a screenshot of their phones
running GPS Status in aospX?

Whenever I run GPS Status, it often seems to just sit there. It doesn't have
that waiting spool animation for me (that circular icon that goes round and
round while it waits for a lock), and it doesn't display ads. The compass,
magnet, and accelerometers work fine though.

I want to offer a reminder for some people who are reporting persistent issues
with getting a GPS fix, especially if you're having trouble even after trying
other roms. The DHD / Inspire, suffers from a design flaw that can cause the
contacts between the antenna and the GPS receiver to make a poor connection.
Before spending too much time experimenting with fixes, it may be worth trying
another rom to confirm that you're not suffering from a hardware issue. I have
this problem on mine, and I can occasionally get a fix, but it takes several
minutes and doesn't remain stable.

i've got good lock of gps, initially in Navigation and GPS Test. When i go into
Navigation, I get a "lock," but 30 seconds later, i get the "GPS signal lost"
verbal notification. I used to get this with CM7, too. When i switched back
to CoreDroid, this issue goes away. seems to be consistent w/ my AOSP
experiences. wanna stick w/ this ROM, though. good stuff.

My GPS problems w/ BR3 went away after flashing the AGPS patch via CWM. For
those of you that have flashed this patch and are still having problems, I'd
recommend doing a full wipe and reload aospX

Hey Guys. I don't know exactly, what was accompanied to solution to my GPS
issue, but i can tell your surely, that now it works for me. :o) On last time:
1. I've tried Pfaffinator's BR3 theme, 2. I've reinstalled the aospX without
full wipe, 3. Update my navigator application. Good Luck to all !

Thanks pyc for updating us on this!!! I am very happy with this ROM, too.

For a year, I struggled on CM7 with the kind of GSP issues jethomso just wrote
about. These issues have disappeared with radio upgrade to
12.59.60.26U_26.11.04.21_M after flashing aospx BR3 (and inspiremod, I'm in the
US + I'm using the recommended RIL).

I too had to reflash something twice, in my case the 12.59... radio. I see pyc
uses a newer radio: 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M.

So perhaps the advice after migrating to aospx is to make sure GPS works with
repeated flashings? The various pieces interact in ways that are probably not
understood.

I did a superwipe then flashed back to stock AT&T Gingerbread (with the
original stock radio and RIL). I didn't get a GPS lock even when I went back to
stock.

Now I'm pretty sure my issue is internal hardware, though I have no way to test
or verify this since everything else on my phone works fine. My apps also can
tell when my GPS is on and off, I'm just not getting any reception somehow.

I superwiped again and flashed the AOSP radio and RIL then flashed back to
aospX (because I love this rom). GPS still doesn't work. I'm going to try to
flash the 12.59 radio one more time to see if it makes a difference. If that
doesn't work I'll just wait for my new antenna to arrive. If the new antenna
doesn't work then my issue is unique to my phone :)

BR5 was released a few days ago, can the original reporter or someone who has
already posted please verify one of the following..

"This is still an issue in BR5"

or

"This has been fixed in BR5"

Original comment by robbe...@gmail.com on 11 Aug 2012 at 8:50

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
After weeks of road testing with BR3 and BR4 (not BR5): this is still an issue,
not severe, overall GPS works vastly better than in my Cyanogenmod Gingerbread
ROM. (Fortunately, all those frequent phone crashes never evolved into
automotive ones.) The problem with GPS crashing the phone was solved
eventually, I believe, and solution made it into aospx.

What still happens seems to be widely reported: while using navigation, I
suddenly get "Searching for GPS..." It will come back as soon as GPS is turned
off and the immediately on. While the signal is "lost" the navigation map may
intermittently be updated with the correct position or maybe not at all. Other
applications will experience the same problem (such as Cardio Trainer).

I don't believe in any of the myriad of GPS fixes I've seen. I think there is a
bug in say the RIL, but it could be a much lower level. This is certainly
fixable in a coarse way by wrapping the api with a timer that kicks the GPS's
butt when misbehaving. That's because the problem responds 100% to manually
switching GPS on/off.

To find the problem would require manual instrumenting the radio apis with
logging calls. My best reference to the kind of deeper problem that may be at
play is http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=5595 (that thread was
inadvertently "spammed" by unhappy users in a nearby thread).

Was GPS updated in BR5? I did check the changelog and didn't see anything that
seemed related.

robbe...@gmail.com: thanks for the great work!!

I was out of the country for a few weeks so I didn't have the time to try BR5
or BR6. I also decided to just get a new phone (Nexus One) and got rid of my
Inspire.

Good luck to y'all if you're still wrestling the problem!

Original comment by no.da...@gmail.com on 18 Aug 2012 at 12:08

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
I can confirm that the problem still exists in BR6.

The AGPS patch doesn't fix this.

The problem can easily be replicated. Go to Navigation, type in a destination,
wait for the phone to lock to a GPS signal, it will get a lock and Navigation
will then be active. Then wait about 5 minutes. The phone will lose GPS lock
and you will not be able to get it back without a reboot.

I know this may sound stupid but are you sure your Location Services are
selected properly? I ask because I was having the same problem with my google
maps not finding my location but for some reason Google's Location Servioce was
not selected, only GPS Satelllites was. Once I ticked the Google's location
service box, it works great.

Go to settings>Location Services to check. Hope that helps a couple of you out.

Just a warning: inspire-mod does not flash correctly with twrp2 even though the
on-screen log says so!!! (twrp2 = Team Win Recovery Project, which you may have
been inspired to install with the previous goomanager)

I verified this by looking at the 'About Phone' Model number after flashing: it
should not show "Desire HD" after flashing but "Inspire 4G". But my phone was
still branded as "Desire HD". I also checked directly that nothing in the
build.prop file had changed, nor had the sound files been removed as specified
in the script.

Reverting to Clockwork recovery (installed from the Clockwork app) and flashing
inspiremod from there solved the problem.

Since I did have occasional gps hick-ups with a verified inspiremod flash, I
still believe there is an obscure problem lurking. It is solved by turning gps
off and then on. I am now on BR7 and will continue testing...
