@danabauer rightfully mentions that fear is a big factor in terms of open data releases. We should address this:

Any other fear-related topics?

fear of giving up precious goods, fear that releasing data will lead to death of the org, esp. if org is a data curator/gatekeeper

I love the premise of simpleopendata, providing a guide on how to do open data right and not why you should do open data:

So you want to publish some open data?

http://simpleopendata.com/

This is what keeps this guide simple and focused. The why you should do open data is a hugely important topic, but I'd say it's simply out of scope here.

Now why should we spend the energy on simpleopendata.com and not whyyoushoulddoopendata.com? It's because there's been a lot of talk about the why and there's a surprising amount of confusion about the how. Way too many folks get distracted with APIs, complex software integrations, linked data, when the basics are so simple.

@lxbarth makes a convincing argument: brevity is important and in short supply. let's keep this focused.
