The README has been modified to leverage Markdown (by changing the file extension). Hyperlinks have been edited to better conform to Markdown style. A table of contents was included, but is by no means necessary at this point in time; if further additions were made to the README, the TOC would facilitate easier navigation. Other small changes to the text are mentioned in the commits.
Some changes were made to improve the "look" of the README, including a more descriptive title and a different layout for the Acknowledgments section. These changes can be undone if desired.
