Segmentation fault when running ./runSynapse.sh on Linux #125

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Compile Synapse
2. cd to bin folder
3. run ./runSynapse.sh

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The program crashes with the following error:
./runSynapse.sh: line 7:  4573 Segmentation fault      "$NEW_LD_DIR/alter"

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Synapse revision 812 on Ubuntu 10.10
