This is not really an issue, I was just wondering if there had been a study to find the most popular endings in Germany. Have you heard of anything like that? Maybe a few smart searches / sorting manipulations of the place names in an OSM extract can give a decent answer?

This older work looks interesting, even when the Designer was also just making his personal selections of endings: http://truth-and-beauty.net/experiments/ach-ingen-zell/ https://github.com/MoritzStefaner/ach-ingen-zell

And from that, somebody made this more interactive version with lots of countries: http://bgrsquared.com/places/ https://github.com/bgrsquared/places

Please mind that I also did not just choose suffixes by frequency, but also by regional specificity. If you look at the most popular one ("-dorf", https://tobiaskauer.org/projects/end/?dorf) - it's very frequent but not very specific, therefore it is not included in the initial visualization.

I found Moritz' work literally in the moment I published my own, after being inspired by a french version: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/fzfpz0/suffixes_in_french_city_names_hq_in_comments/.
