getRecommendations doesn't update correctly #191

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.click "get Recommendations" when you have them waiting

What is the expected output? 

Should update the entire interface

Instead, it looks like no tab is highlighted, and current messages stay the 
same.  You then must click a tab to see the updates.
