Translations via intermediate language sometimes return the intermediate language itself #20

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Choose from and to languages that do not form a valid language pair,
like Dutch to French, so that Translate will use English as the
intermediate language.
2. Pick a word that can be translated from Dutch to English, but not from
English to French.
3. Watch the result be the English translation.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The expected output in this case is to return the dutch word itself, which
seems to be the normal response to an unknown word. In stead you get the
English translation.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
0.28

Please provide any additional information below.
I'm using the api to translate single words from Dutch to the users native
lannguage.

Thanks so much for this API, I love the simplicity of it.

Thanks for the bug report Maarten, I'll look into fixing this asap. If you have
any
examples that demonstrate this it would be helpful if you could add a comment
to this
issue with those examples.

Thanks for the swift response.

Going from Dutch to Spanish:
(Form is :Dutch input (English translation) -> output (Spanish translation)

zeiden (past tense of 'to say') -> said (should be 'dijeron')
winnen ('to win') -> win (should be 'ganar')
straal ('jet') -> jet (I don't know in Spanish but certainly not 'jet' ;-)

Each of these are words that get translated from Dutch to English properly, but
apparently can't be translated from English to Spanish.

This should be fixed to return the original phrase if no change is made between
the
intermediary language and either the original text or the result, in build 0.29.

The problem may persist where individual words within sentences cannot be
translated
but I'm reluctant to try and code around that situation without supporting
metadata.
