Configure via environment variables #62

This is a new branch off of #58 that cleans up some things and adds unit tests.

@Giuseppe-Mazzapica and @franz-josef-kaiser can you take a look at this branch and see if this satisfies your needs? I cleaned up the other branch with the following:

Brought the branch in line with this project's coding standards
Moved documentation to the correct place
Fixed a typo
Switched the isset check to empty
Added unit tests

If this looks good to you, I think we are ready to merge.
