How complicated would it be making Storage bus/Importer/Exporter/Interface versions of the connectors? Is that out of scope of your vision of the mod?
Using the wires with AE2 looks neat, but it doesn't look as good in those instances where you have to put a connector+cable+exporter. After using it a bit, I just wanted the connector to be right against the machine making the connection needed, but that's not how it works.
Well, the same could be achieved by allowing the connectors to connect directly to things like the storage bus, as in using the same block space like the cable does.
