Improve active cooler behaviour #295

Closed D3nnis3n closed 6 years ago

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Hello, is there any way to configure the speed of the spread? We switched over to use the spread, but it's much too slow. It can cool for two seconds and after that the tanks are empty, while when every cooler got its pipe it's working without problems.

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

Heyo - the spread happens literally every tick, so there's no way I can make it any quicker - you may need to have a pipe every few coolers if it is still not quick enough.

However, in an upcoming version of NC, I'm revamping the way active coolers work a bit, so that should fix the issue - until that change happens, I'll leave this issue up :)

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Well, i do not know if i will profit from the revamp - i still use the legacy mode, as i do not like the way the coolers behave post 2.9. How's the stance on this?

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

You can still use the old controllers with the old rules if you update - you just won't be able to craft any more old controllers unless you CraftTweak the recipe or just cheat them in.

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

What do you mean with controllers? I set the use_experimental_fission variable to false. What has a controller to do with that?

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

The 'experimental fission' config doesn't do anything with the cooler rules - in fact, in the latest version, that config is gone completely. All it did was allow the fuels without fuel rods to be used in the reactor, which is now possible anyway.

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Without fuel rods? You mean i can just put LEU-235 in without fuel rods? oO So should i activate or deactivate this?

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

Yep! However, if you're using an old version, a lot of the textures will be broken, hence the 'experimental' config.

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

I'm using the latest version but do not want to use the new fission reactor system - so i can disable the experimental mode?

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

As I said, there is no ‘experimental’ mechanics anymore - just use the old controllers :)

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Okay, now i got that. Thought the config would update. Another Question: Fuel Rods are no longer needed? Could you explain why? Afaik real power plants do use them. Is there any way to recreate the old behaviour? Even if it was possible with crafttweaker we would have that note in the tooltip that it is not needed, despite it is ...

Not so happy with the changes lately :( But hoping for steam reactors :)

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

Well, before, you had one fuel rod going into multiple cells in the structure, which didn't make much sense... now you have the raw fuel material going into the cells (effectively cubic fuel rods).

You might just not be used to the new mechanics yet - the main reason it changed was to remove the major exploitations. And molten salt reactors and steam turbines are in the works :)

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Well, for a server-wide nuclear power plant that is not available to players (at least not in the home world, but only on other AR planets) - as we use it - it's pretty hard with the new mechanics. I tried a bit around but could find no good build that gives me enough production - and i cannot find any examples on the net (in difference to the old mechanics). It's also no longer possible to make an easy containment with active fluid coolers to get at least a medium amount of RF out it. It's also harder to change the builds for other fuels.

That's just too much for us, as we need a working nuclear power plant at all times, as all electricity for the whole server and anything made on it is made there. In tips and links to good builds with the new system i would definitley be interested.

But i understand that now the cubes are the rods - but i more thought of them as the containment for the rods, while the rest is free room and coolers - as in a real power plant.

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

Check out this video for an example of how to use the new mechanics. They are definitely harder now, but you can still make very efficient designs - if you join our Discord server we have a channel where we specifically discuss designs, and there are a lot of good ones :)

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Well, our goal is to use only liquid water cooling, as we don't want to use liquid fuels like diamond or gold. With our design we atm get 52000 RF/t with LEU-235 and can walk in the reactor - while that overly complicated reactor gives not even half of that.

This designs would make ExtremeReactors the better choice, which we do not like. So i'll just hope the legacy mode will be available for some versions still.

But that spreadsheet is very helpful.

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Any chance the old config option

Do water coolers have to be adjacent to reactor casing?

B:fission_water_cooler_requirement=true

could be integrated but in the sense of the new requirements? E.g. stripping them off requirements, or changing it back to the old behaviour?

It's still there (just regenerated my configs) - does it work in the new reactor system?

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

I just tested it, it does work. So well, then everything is fine now.

tomdodd4598 commented 6 years ago

Oh yeh, the legacy controllers will still be valid forever. Until v1.13, anyway.

I just tested it, it does work.

Should probably re-do that description!

D3nnis3n commented 6 years ago

Yeh, making that description more obvious like "Removes all requirements for water coolers" would be great. With this option we can still make nice looking reactor designs that are somewhat efficent. Indeed my reactor now is 2x efficent and producing double the amount of RF with the new system and unlocked water coolers (which still are on the position they were valid for in pre 2.9). This is fine for us. Thank you for that option.

I already activated the molten salt blocks - seems interesting. But the most i'm excited for steam. Then we'll be able to finally kill all these mekanism and extreme reactors power plants and remove extreme reactors completley. Thanks for being so open for config options! And sorry for my many questions, but with all the information only being in videos nowadays it's hard to get good information. I hate watching videos. And the wiki in ftb is okay, but not as good as wikis and manuals were earlier.

Absolutely no problem, and don't worry about it! The FTB wiki is just sooo much easier to work with, and were getting more information added to it at a much faster rate.

Anyway, I'm gonna close this, as the active cooling fluid spreading should be a lot better now :)
