I just realised that I had not specifically said it anywhere - I (finally) received a board and thats how I was able to get this running

The jessie -> stretch
didn't fix it for his 3b+.
This is why I want him to reconfirm.
I'm pretty convinced that the change he tried didnt end up in the build he tried booting. Or, alternatively, that it takes so long to bootup that he gave up.
