Portugal | Data Improvements #163

Open HajarElOuafi-TomTom opened 1 year ago

Project description

Goal

To improve the map quality in Portugal, we propose to make data improvements by sharing challenges that can help fix data errors, and add certain kinds of features.

When appropriate, our team will also work on these challenges. If a challenge is more suitable to be solved without organised help, we will leave it for local users interested in completing the tasks. Challenges like this will be indicated as such in the overview below.

How to participate

Anyone is welcome to contribute to this project by participating in our MapRoulette challenges. Here is the extended documentation for using MR. Note that sometimes additional instructions are provided within the challenges. We also strongly encourage you to make use of the resources listed in the OSM wiki section Padronização do OSM em Portugal while you are editing.

Here is the current set of challenges.

Challenges

Quality check challenges

Click to expand. - [Polygon has self-intersection](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/36811) The necessary edits will be made to fix cases where the tag on a way indicates that the object is a polygon feature, but the way does not meet the definition of a closed way because it is self-intersecting, or ways in a relation with the same role form a self-intersecting polygon - [Spiky buildings](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/36806) - [Portugal - Fix Spiky Buildings](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/45170) Buildings with extremely sharp angles will be identified and corrected if needed. - [Polygon is not closed](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/36814) Features intended to be a polygon should be correctly tagged. When the tag indicates that the object should be a polygon, but the geometry is built out of a NON-closed way, an error is logged.

Geometry & Intersecting challenges

Click to expand. - [Portugal - Isolated roads - Country](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/37408) Leads are generated based on analysis of road classes and their connection to the rest of the road network. the goal is to connect the hanging roads to the nearest road network based on the available imagery and/or probe sources. - [Portugal - Add Highways](https://maproulette.org/admin/project/50370/challenge/37919) Data analysis done by TomTom suggests that there should be a road or track here in OSM, but it is missing. - [Portugal - Fix Building & Highway intersections](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/39543) Leads are generated based on a spatial comparison of highways and buildings available in the OSM data. The objective is to Identify and fix, if needed, cases where a way with tag highway=* intersects with a building. - [Portugal - Fix Building and Water Intersections](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/40255) Our team discovered instances where a water feature intersects with a building during a spatial analysis of water features and buildings available in OSM. The objective of this challenge is to identify and rectify, if necessary, situations where a water feature intersects with a building using reliable sources to ensure accurate map and data representation. As with any spatial analysis, there might be some false positives. In such cases, we kindly request you to mark the task as ‘Not an issue’ if you find that the task instructions are invalid based on your knowledge. - [Portugal - Fix Incorrect Highway Junctions](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/41729) Identify and fix if needed, cases where highway junctions are incorrectly or imprecisely mapped. We improve overall OpenStreetMap (OSM) route network quality by solving real errors in the data. Ensuring that highway junctions are connected within OSM is crucial for optimized routing. When road elements are disconnected or imprecisely mapped, it can degrade the navigation experience for routing applications that rely on OSM data, leading to inefficient directions, delays, and potential navigation errors. - [Portugal - Fix Incorrect Junctions on Roundabouts](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/42315) We’ve developed new checks aimed at identifying and correcting cases where two or more highways are connected to the same node on a roundabout. According to the [[OSM wiki documentation](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:junction%3Droundabout#:~:text=of%20that%20routes.-,Connecting%20ways,-Connect%20the%20approaching)](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:junction%3Droundabout#:~:text=of%20that%20routes.-,Connecting%20ways,-Connect%20the%20approaching), highways entering and exiting a roundabout should never connect to the same node on that roundabout. Why is this important? Fixing such situations will enable routing applications that rely on OSM data to correctly recognize the situation, providing improved guidance when entering or exiting a roundabout. The Leads were detected based on a query of OSM data. We compared the number of highways entering and exiting a roundabout to find situations with a high number of highways or a low number of highways that are part of junction=roundabout or junction=circular. We excluded pedestrian paths, cycleways and roads that are located on different levels (bridges, tunnels). - [Portugal - Fix Intersecting Buildings](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/42316) We’ve identified these tasks through a spatial comparison of buildings in OSM. The goal is to detect and address situations where a building intersects with another building at the same layer. Please be aware that there might be false positives, so we kindly ask you to leverage your local knowledge and utilize the most reliable sources to handle these issues. - [Portugal - Fix Incorrect Junctions on Roundabouts](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/42315) We’ve developed new checks aimed at identifying and correcting cases where two or more highways are connected to the same node on a roundabout. We excluded pedestrian paths, cycleways and roads that are located on different levels (bridges, tunnels). - [Portugal - Mapping Missing Roads and Buildings in Guimarães](https://tasks.openstreetmap.us/projects/544) Accurate maps are vital for various applications concerning urban planning, emergency response, and navigation services. This collaborative mapping project, supported by TomTom, aims to improve the OpenStreetMap (OSM) data by adding roads and buildings that are missing in the urban area of Guimarães, Portugal. - [Portugal - Mapping Missing Roads and Buildings in Guimarães](https://tasks.openstreetmap.us/projects/544) Accurate maps are vital for various applications concerning urban planning, emergency response, and navigation services. Tagging challenges

Click to expand. - [Portugal - Fix Inconsistent Bridge and Tunnel Tagging](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/40257) Following the guidelines outlined in the OSM Wiki, we have developed a process to identify cases where bridges and tunnels have been inconsistently tagged. Our goal is to draw your attention to these issues and provide an opportunity for the community to improve this feature. - [Portugal - Update deprecated landuse=reservoir tags - Guarda](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/43078)By updating deprecated tags, you are making the OpenStreetMap data more consistent and easier to work with for OSM users. This challenge helps you update the deprecated tag landuse=reservoir on water reservoirs in Portugal. The [OSM wiki](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Deprecated_features#Deprecated_features) recommends that this tag be replaced with the tag combination natural=water + water=reservoir. You will find detailed guidelines for how to do this in the left-hand instruction panel of each task. While editing the water bodies in this challenge, you may further improve them by correcting their outline if needed, or remove them if they no longer exist. - [Portugal - Update deprecated landuse=reservoir tags - Braga](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/43452) updating deprecated tags, you are making the OpenStreetMap data more consistent and easier to work with for OSM users. LCLU (Landcover Landuse) challenges

Click to expand. - [Portugal - Check Small Area Features](https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/43545) By optimizing area features in OSM, you are helping make sure that they are correctly rendered for end users of OSM-based maps and applications. This challenge in Portugal helps you check area features of different types (various land use, natural, amenity and leisure features) that are smaller than expected for areas of these types. You may need to correct an area’s tagging, adjust its outline, or merge it with other areas. To do so, follow the detailed guidelines in the left-hand instruction panel of each task. **How was this challenge created?** We at TomTom identified different kinds of area features with a surface smaller than a certain predefined value: * areas tagged with amenity=clinic and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with amenity=hospital and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with amenity=parking and < 5 m2, * areas tagged with amenity=school and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with amenity=university and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with landuse=farmland and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with landuse=farmyard and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with landuse=forest and < 50 m2, * areas tagged with landuse=industrial and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with landuse=meadow and < 50 m2, * areas tagged with landuse=residential and < 100 m2, * areas tagged with leisure=park and < 50 m2, * areas tagged with natural=wood and < 50 m2. Each of the tasks in this challenge points you to the location of one of the small areas we found.

Edits based on map feedback

Click to expand. We make improvements to OSM based on user feedback submitted for the TomTom map after comparing and ensuring that it is also valid for OSM. Here is a list of the types of edits to be made, provided they do not conflict with others’ edits and a local source is available: - Highways - Adding or correcting highways - Adding or correcting link roads - Adding or adjusting bridges, tunnels, layers, or relations - Adding or updating lanes and related properties - Adding or updating traffic signs - Adding or updating access barriers - Adding or updating turn restrictions - Addresses - Adding or correcting addresses - Updating the position of address nodes, usually when an object has multiple addresses - Adding or correcting names of ways - POIs (Points of Interest) - Adding POIs - Correcting POI locations - Adding or correcting POI information - Resolving POI-land use discrepancies - Handling POI closures - Land use - Adding land use - Modifying existing land use extent - Buildings - Adding buildings - Updating building type - Adjusting building shape - Water - Adding or realigning rivers, streams, and lakes. - Railways - Adding railway tracks - Realigning railway tracks - Adding or adjusting railway infrastructure tags such as bridges, tunnels, level crossings - Ferry lines - Adding ferry lines - Realigning ferry lines - Adding ferry terminals These are incidental edits spread over time starting June 5th, 2023. We follow local guidelines and, if needed, consult with the community before making an update.

Geographical scope

Data improvements will be made across the whole country.

Announcements

This project was announced in:

TomTom organised editing

We will follow the Organised Editing Guidelines for this project. TomTom will not make any edits until two weeks after the project announcement. Here is our Organised Editing page, including a list of our editors.

How to find TomTom's edits

All edits made by our team have the hashtag #tt, #tomtom or #tt_mapfeedback

Sources for editing

For some OSM map edits TomTom editors will use proprietary sources for support. These will typically be in situations where there is not sufficient evidence using the available sources in OSM editors themselves. The proprietary sources will be ground-level imagery and GPS traces, both collected by TomTom's mobile mapping vans. On occasion, we will also use sources collected from a field survey by one of TomTom's sourcing specialists who have visited the location and collected data to support the required map updates.

How to reach out
