Is it ok to use 12 words mnemonic instead of 24?

Many wallets out there are forcing 24 words.

@roccomuso TON uses 24 words recovery phrases, which chain are you using?

My question is different. Let's say I wanna build a wallet that use 12 words. Would it be possible to generate valid keys and address from a 12 words instead of 24 words?
