The tangents don't really matter us to much. We do have the custom normal map support. This should be the better generator. It seems to really perform the same, time-wise. And also we wouldn't have this fork of jME generator, just using stock one.
This new one fails to generate tangents for 245 geometries (a model can have multiple geometries). The old one also gave some warnings so I guess it is pretty much the same.
