Use a bridge diode and 2200Uuf capacitor (or two 1000uf capacitors) to convert VAC to VDC then you can use LM2576 #52 to reduce the VDC voltage.
The challenge here manages to use 220v as input and reduce it to 24VAC with a small transformer.
Here is an example of the use of a transformerless 1A power supply.
