Sorry, I jumped the gun. I was unaware that I had to unlock the bootloader
first.
BUT still I am unable to root the device even after the unlock. Now I just get
the android with a red triangle but no text and it stays there. Instruction
state: Go to 'install zip from sdcard' >> 'choose zip from sdcard' >> 'UNLT'
and choose 'su.zip'.
... but I don't see anything like that. What am I missing?

Had same problem.
Easy way to fix it:
- Select your device
- Use manual (fastboot) mode
- Flash ClockworkRecovery
- Reboot device using Clockwork recovery (confirm to disable recovery restore
by ROM)
- Try to root again.
