My issue with the new update (ads and privacy pop-up) #488

I feel like since the update the UI is now horrible. Between ads (some of which weren't very appropriate), and pop-ups saying you value our privacy not just once every time we come onto the website, but every single time we change page, it's getting very annoying to navigate the site.

I understand the need for adverts, but surely it could be done in a less intrusive way? Also I've seen suggestions for some kind of premium mode to get twice the rewards, which could be used as an alternative to adverts (or at least be used to reduce the quantity of adverts as a whole)

I really like the idea behind top.gg, and use the website a lot, but this new update is really turning me away from it, and I don't think it's just me. I'd really appreciate alternative methods of making a profit be thought of, and some more work on the UI (mainly pop-ups) being a bit less common

they are trying to track their users. they went right through my anti-tracker system i had setup meaning theyre really tryna track you

also you can no longer goddamn vote with an adblocker

theyre getting enough money from those bot ad spots on the homepage, idk why theyre still trying to get even more profit. i have a couple things to say.

top.gg, please stop, you were good before, please stop turning into a sketchy website. i no longer trust top.gg with my discord email, so ive changed it and will no longer use top.gg from now on, until this is fixed. top.gg, you are just losing users, nobody pays $2 just to get rid of ads.

Are you posting an old comment by any chance? We've not only not added new trackers but we removed 5 unused ones this week and started allowing adblock usage. You may want to look at this commment for context.

Top.gg may have remove some trackers but the comment says more will be removed "when time is available". Privacy IS IMPORTANT. It should be done IMMEDIATELY. Not "when time is available" this just proofed that top.gg doesn't care very much about user privacy. I am referring to this: https://github.com/top-gg/issues/issues/457#issuecomment-724953113

If you have any specific privacy related issues you're free to bring them up, as you can tell we do try to do our best to listen to feedback. So far nobody has come up to me with any specific points and as far as I can tell, we've removed everything (other than what advertisers use, which you can argue can be harmful but that would be a different discussion) that could be a privacy issue including adsense which was a big concern for people before.

I'm happy to take community feedback into consideration when making changes but I really don't appreciate people reaching for straws with pedantic comments just for the sake of criticism. If you do think there are privacy issues, I'd like you to bring it up but this ain't it chief.

As for the issue itself, if you keep seeing privacy popups that could be an extension or your browser preventing the use of cookies which is used to remember your response. Not entirely sure if that's the problem as this is the first time I'm hearing this

You removed "trackers"? That means you ARE tracking us which makes the entire TOP.GG insecure. Why the heck are you tracking us?

I understand sometimes it's needed but you removed 5 UNUSED ones!??? I can't imagine how many trackers there are being used then

Before you start being afraid, it might be useful to look up the definition of trackers in web development. We use trackers to anonymously report site data for e.g. page views, session duration, etc. Any site will do this using Google Analytics, or similar software. https://stackshare.io/google-analytics

Keep in mind that the project is old, and has seen a lot of different people working on it. We've removed some of the old ones that the current team does not use. This data is not harmful towards users, rather helps us make decisions on the platform.

That is valid, yet, we as a company would like to grow and build a more solid foundation to grow from for everyone in the future :)
