Unable to load driver, Class win32_error Open Service 1060, The specified service doesn't exist as an installed service #75

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.When opening Peer Block from start menu or program files.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Driver error pop up message.

What version of PeerBlock are you using? On what operating system? 32- or
64-bit? First saw the error with Peer Block v0.9.2.r86 on 32bit XP
professional with SP3.

Please provide any additional information below. Make sure to attach
peerblock.log and/or any screenshots that would help explain your problem.

When I first got this error was about a week ago. I uninstalled PeerBlock
via Revo Uninstaller, then ran Ccleaner, reinstalled r86 and still got the
error. I uninstalled, ccleaner, verified program files folder was deleted
and registry keys (that i know of) were deleted, installed again and got
the error. Tried PeerGuardian2 070309 and got the error. Saw peer block r93
was out and tried that to no avail. I'm currently running r93. I will also
attach a pic of the error along with my log file.

Hmm, interesting - nobody's reported this one yet. Giving the code a quick
once-over
we're not really tracing any interim errors we could be receiving, so I don't
believe
we're seeing the whole picture leading up to this error. I'll add some
additional
instrumentation to the code as a first step to tracking this down.

Well I've been also having issues with my tcp/ip protocol driver not being able
to be
found on intermittent reboots. This has been occurring ever since my pc crashed
a few
weeks ago so that was an error I've yet to fix as well. However the peer block
error
has only popped up the last week or so. So I actually started troubleshooting
my
protocol issue and I see Microsoft's ipv6 protocol installed on my network
adapter.
So I go ahead and uninstall that, reboot, my network comes up ok AND finally no
error
for PeerBlock. Granite it has only been one reboot so I haven't tested it with
more
reboots to see if my network problem is solved but this is the first instance
where I
haven't received the peer block error.

I see we have three people having "starred" this bug, but only one person having
shared their story / logs. Could those of you hitting this bug attempt a repro
on
1.0 (r181), and post the results?

Targetting this for 1.1

Haven't heard any recent reports regarding this bug, so I'm going to assume it
was
caused by the original submitter's TCP/IP problems. Marking it as closed, can
re-open it if anyone hits the bug again.

I have the exact same issue (same as at
http://forums.peerblock.com/read.php?3,1849
as well).
My machine is running Windows XP Professional 32bit.
I have tried both the stable 1.0 release and the latest interim release as of
10/14,
both have the same error. I have tried the portable release, and also comes up
with
the same error.
I too have used Revo Uninstaller to completely clean out the registry keys left
by
PeerBlock, but to no avail.

I would love to see a resolution to this issue.

Re-opening this bug, as it's still being seen.

Thank you for the peerblock.log, it looks as though we failed to create the
Windows
Service wrapping our pbfilter.sys driver, which is leading to use failing when
we try
to query for that service. Looks like we'll need to add additional debug
information
around the service-creation code and post a new test version for people to repro
against, as we're not trapping that initial error.

Bumping up priority to High, to make sure it gets attention sooner rather than

I went to replace existing PG v2.06 and installed PB v1.0.0.r181
Upon launching it for the first time I get "unable to load the packet filtering

(PG is not running)

Ah, that one - "CreateFile, 2, The system cannot find the file specified" is
actually
fixed in our most recent Beta Release. If you download that release
(http://www.peerblock.com/releases/interim-releases/peerblock-1.0.0-r202) it
should
work well for you.

I was having this same problem and found out that I had another firewall program
(outpost) that was running too. I shut down that firewall and peerblock run just
fine. I guess that you can't have 2 firewall programs running at the same time
or
peerblock uses some shared driver that the other one was using. Hope this might
help.

I've been using mine off and on for months and had no problem till yesterday
and now
everytime I try to run it it crashes with my 1st post error and then this one.
I've
restarted my machine and had no luck. Been using ZoneAlarm firewall with no
problems.
Also using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware also. My current version of Peer Block is
1.0.0.181. Here's the other error code I get.

Well, unfortunately I´m also one more person having the same problems listed
above...Seems it´s a big BUG issue to be seeing by those who create
PeerBlock...

My complete post is at http://forums.peerblock.com/read.php?3,5594, when I
started to
write a few hours ago: "Hello...I´ve been using, at first, PeerGuardian and,
then,
PeerBlock v1.0.0.r181 with no problems...I don´t know why ( maybe something to
be
with Comodo Firewall?) but a couple of days ago, PeerBlock stopped to work, or
better, could not be launched. I use Windows XP Professional SP3 and the
general msg
is: " PeerBlock is unable to load the packet filtering driver. This could
happen if
PeerBlock crashed and didn´t have a chance to unload the file or if the file
pbfilter.sys can´t be found".
Well, since the file pbfilter.sys exists, I decided to remove PeerBlock
completely,
turn off my PC, wait for some minutes, turn on my PC again choosing Comodo
Firewall´s
Training Mode option and install the software downloaded from PeerBlock
website.
Unfortunately, besides the msg above, I got these following ones:
"Open Service
1060
The specified service does not exist as an installed service"

I just started having this problem as well. No recent changes to the computer,
but when
I booted up this morning I got the "The specified service does not exist as an
installed service" message. I tried reinstalling the stable version, and then
installing the beta version (r320), however neither one fixed the issue.

This just popped up on my system as well. I'd been using Peerblock without any
issues for several months. Yesterday I hit the exact same bug (Peerblock
failing to launch) and the same error message as in comment 14 above.

Of possible relevance:
- I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit.
- Peerblock was configured to auto-update on launch, but had not done so for a
while.
- Yesterday when I first encountered the error, I noticed that Peerblock was
still listed as a service in the task manager, despite not launching properly.
- I reinstalled (without uninstalling) and the error persisted.
- This morning I uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller Pro, reinstalled, and the
error is still persisting, but it is not still being listed as an active
service.
- I used to get a Windows security prompt when I launched PeerBlock, asking for
permission to make changes on the HD. Since the error began, this security
prompt no longer appears.

Hope this helps.

I went to use PeerBlock this morning and encountered the exact same problems.
(Running fully updated Win XP.) Seems to have appeared within the last month or
two for me. (My guess it has something to do with a recent Windows update?)
Apparently the only way to avoid this is to either keep PeerBlock resident or
reboot after exiting the program, neither of which is a viable option for me. I
even went to the Peerblock IRC chat site for assistance, d'loaded and installed
the latest Beta version (r404), and rebooted as instructed and found, much to
my dismay, that it still hasn't been fixed. Nearly a year and still no
resolution to the problem??? This is rediculous!

Below is a piece of the log entry for a "good" startup after a reboot:

I'm curious about a possible conflict between the the "flagging driver as non

the driver?

The people I chatted with on IRC were quick to point the finger at Microsoft's
driver, and they may very well be right. But the fact still remains that this
problem is now almost a year old and has reappeared regardless of what's been
"fixed" in the Beta releases. And, with all due respect to Microsoft, I have NO
intention of "upgrading" to Vista or "7" - I'll get a MAC before I do that -
right now I'll just have to do without PeerBlock, although I WILL be searching
for an alternative that WORKS!

Some things to ponder:

(1) Why are there path discrepancies?
(2) Why has "the specified service been marked for deletion" anyway? Is
deletion really necessary? If, so, isn't there a way it can be deleted without
rebooting? If not, why bother?

Hi!
Let me tell you how I´ve "fixed" my problem:
1) with Revo Unisntaller I´ve removed the latest Stable Release: PeerBlock
1.0 (released Sept 27, 2009)
2) 3 months later, I decided to try the latest Beta Release: PeerBlock 1.0+
(r404) (released June 9, 2010)

And it has been being working here so far...however I have no clue of the
consequences of using a Beta version, since it is not considered "stable"...:-/

Proteus124, have you tried using an uninstaller like Revo?

VMorim in comment 22 above described exactly what worked for me. What was
important was that a complete uninstall was done, including registry details,
empty folders - everything. I had zero luck re-installing the newer version
until I used Revo. Try the free version, and if you've already uninstalled
Peerblock, reinstall it, restart and then uninstall with Revo.

If that doesn't fix the problem, maybe someone else here can suggest something
else.

Good luck.

PG started blocking its own updates, crashing randomly, leaving me unprotected
and generally screwing up. So a while ago, a year or so, I switched to PB.
Excellent prog, did what it said on the tin, quietly in the background. Till
about a week ago.

PC needed to have a reboot, PB comes up with :-

class win32_error
OpenService
1060
The specified service does not exist as an installed service

Uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, got error, got revo, uninstalled,
cleaned, rebooted, cleaned registry, rebooted, reinstalled, restarted and got
the same error, as the last 12 times.
Am at me wits end cant keep using (the other ip blocker) it blocks google in
one of the lists and I cant toggle between http and not. I cant even allow a
blocked site I want to, well not easily. Please help.

I have these same sorts of issue with my PB (both ver 1.0 release and r484) on
32-bit Windows XP SP3, similar to

Two major problems seem to recur:

1. Often, when Peerblock closes (for whatever reason) it does not gracefully
stop the ipfilter driver, leaving it suspended in a state of "stopping." I've
been unable to force it to quit completely or reinitialize, forcing me to
reboot my PC if I want to use Peerblock again.

I can tell this problem has occurred whenever I restart Peerblock and I see the
following:
In ver 1.0 I get the "Filter driver" error message popup.
In ver r484 I get no error message, PB appears to start normally, but then it
does nothing after updating the lists and opening the main window. (ostensibly
because it cannot utilize the packet filter driver?)

2. My peerblock seems to spontaneously ignore whitelists, both my user-created
one and its own permallow list. Sometimes it obeys them properly, other times
it chooses to ignore whitelists. (Somehow my ISP's [sprint] DNS addresses
[68.28.90.91/68.28.82.91] have been blacklisted as "Department of Defense,"
necessitating their addition to a whitelists if I want to use my connection)

Sometimes, Disabling/Enabling peerblock will remedy this issue, though the
right-click "Allow permanently" doesn't ever change anything (as the addresses
are already in the permallow) and rebuilding the list cache doesn't seem to
change things either.

I would be less puzzled if Peerblock refused to work at all, but it only works
inconsistently, with no obvious visible reasons why.

no success. Anybody resolve this?

I had this problem
Peerblock won't start Class Win32_error OpenService 1060
I had installed something that seemed to mess up .NET Framework 4 on my
computer (Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit)
I downloaded .NET Framework 4 and used the file to remove .NET Framework 4 and
then to re-install it.
PeerBlock starts again!

Problem solved.
I am using version PeerBlock 1.0+ (r484) beta release.
