cstats is generating a compressed 0-length file then failing to load #30

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Attempt to view the IP Traffic tab

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect to see IP traffic by client IP and/or hostname. Instead, no traffic is
shown in different types of display. When choosing Last 24 Hours, Daily, or
Monthly I get an extra error "The cstats program is not responding or busy.
Try again after a few minutes". However, it's been hours with no change.

I've configured the router as a CIFS client using a partition which is exported
from my Linux box via Samba. I've configured cstats to drop its files there,
by setting up cifs1 (mounts successfully) and changing the IP Traffic location
to "Custom path", with the name "/cifs1/router". When I do this and select
"Create new file" and save, then I see the new file showing up on my Linux
system as expected:

$ ll /home/public/router/
total 32
drwxrwxr-x 2 router public 4096 Nov 26 00:00 ./
drwxrwxr-x 20 root public 4096 Nov 25 20:51 ../
-rwxrw-r-- 1 router public 20 Nov 25 21:13 tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1.gz*
-rwxrw-r-- 1 router public 20 Nov 25 21:04 tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1_1.bak*

Note, though, that these files are only 20 chars long AND when I uncompress
them they yield a 0-length file, which doesn't seem right.

Also, when I look at the log file on the router I see constant errors:

Nov 26 00:32:47 unknown user.warn cstats[1148]: Problem loading
/cifs1/router/tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1.gz. Still trying...
Nov 26 00:39:29 unknown user.warn cstats[1148]: Problem loading
/cifs1/router/tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1.gz. Still trying...
Nov 26 00:40:28 unknown user.warn cstats[1148]: Problem loading
/cifs1/router/tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1.gz. Still trying...
Nov 26 00:40:33 unknown user.warn cstats[1148]: Problem loading
/cifs1/router/tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1.gz. Still trying...
Nov 26 00:41:20 unknown user.warn cstats[1148]: Problem loading
/cifs1/router/tomato_cstats_001a704ccec1.gz. Still trying...

Looking at the system logs on my Linux system I don't see any issues from Samba
logged there, and I can access these files (via Samba) from other systems, so I
think the error is really not that it can't access the file, but rather that
the file is an empty, compressed file which is unexpected.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

I've loaded tomato-WRT54G_WRT54GL-1.28.0025Teaman-PPTPD-Std.bin on my WRT54GL
router.

Please provide any additional information below.

Just to be clear: I have over 360G free on the /home partition so it's not a
disk space issue.

Also, I'm putting rstats in that same directory and that seems to work OK (the
files are small, but not 0-length, and I can "restore" them successfully).

I've tried changing the storage for IP Traffic to RAM, and I no longer see that
error message in the log files but I still get no traffic shown on the web
interface. When I go to 24-hours the graph is empty and no IP addresses are
available in the drop-downs. If I click "refresh" the spinner runs
continuously and never stops.
