need to test error cases better #3

normally i'm fine with there being a few errors that we haven't tested because they are unexpected but these aren't. they should be covered.

Spent a few hours on the plane and got full coverage of invalid cases, which bumped it from 84 -> 95%. Also tweaked a few cases for 0.7.0 after getting test coverage, will be out soon.
