SD card corruption when resetting back to Saroo from Albert Odyssee (firmware 0.5) #113

Open hworld opened 1 month ago

hworld commented 1 month ago

With the new firmware 0.5 we are able to reset back to the Saroo menu by pressing A+B+C+Start to first get to the Saturn menu and then pressing Start again to go back to Saroo.

I randomly happened to try this feature out on Albert Odysee (North American version) and it corrupted my whole SD card. I can reproduce this every single time.

Some notes:

Hello: We have tested and could not replicate this issue. Can you provide more information? For example: Sega Saturn version? BIOS version? Game name? SD card brand, model, capacity and format? Where did you buy the Saroo? Do you have a photo of the PCB? Or more details

Hi, I can recreate this issue 100% of the time. Sega Saturn version: VA0 (USA model 1) Bios: NTSC-4-V1.00a Game Name: Sonic Jam (USA) SD card brand: Sandisk 64 gb FAT32 and Kingston 64 gb FAT32 Saroo seller: Shop1102636850 Store on Aliexpress (Saroo board says v1.6 on it)

Method:

  1. Enter Sonic Jam (USA)
  2. Select Sonic & Knuckles (no lock on)
  3. Complete level 1 (Mushroom Hill Zone)
  4. Wait for level 2 to begin (Flying Battery Zone)
  5. Power off Saturn
  6. Power on Saturn
  7. Card should now be corrupted

Now try formatting the SD Card in Exfat and post back the results.

Alright, so I took it upon myself to test this out exactly as you mentioned and YES, when the SD Card was Formatted in Fat32, I could duplicate the results by following the steps provided. The SD Card did indeed get corrupted.

However, I then proceeded to format the same SD Card in Exfat and follow the same steps and the card was perfectly fine with no corruption. I REPEAT THE FORMAT IN EXFAT - NO CORRUPTION.

So as I have been saying all along, this seems to be happening mainly in Fat32 formatted SD cards. Format your SD cards in Exfat.

Games worked fine then suddenly, the Saroo got stuck in a sort of initialization screen that showed a row of colored boxes. SD card was corrupted at this point.

Today my Saroo elite arrived and i'v experienced the exact same problem mentioned above. Played "Metal Slug" to the end and after reseting the console, the Sarro ended up in this initialisatinc screen which shows a bunch of colored blocks. The SD card content is corrupted showing a blank file insted of the Saroo folder with 0kB of size.

I've also noticed in firmware v0.5 that alphabeticals sorting of games doesn't work (i've put 250 Games on it) and that soft reset (start+A+B+C) worked at the beginning, but after a while this also stopped working.

Now i have to recreate my enire SD card again with the firmware and copy all my games which takes several hours... pretty annoying. in my oppinion this 0.5 firmware runs very unstable and even corrupts your data after a while.

Mikeylovesretro commented 3 weeks ago

Fat32 file format has an issue working well on firm v0.5 this has been stated many times. I have tested this on many games and no more apparent than https://github.com/tpunix/SAROO/issues/113#issuecomment-2154913766

If you are currently using FAT32 SD Card on Firm v0.5 you are risking corruption.

LAST TIME ILL SAY IT FORMAT YOUR SD CARDS IN EXFAT NOT FAT32!

Or more details

Model 2 VA5 Pal Saturn (switched to 60hz) NTSC-C-V1.01a Sandisk 32GB Purchased of Aliexpress. Its the latest version thats being sold. Its the Elite version with the blue PCB. My issues have been random, so no set game. Sega rally netlink edition its happened a couple of times and Panzer Dragoon 2. This has happened with sdcard formatted as Fat32. Currently trying exfat at the moment and no issues upto yet.

After testing Sonic Jam (USA) formatted in FAT32 using the updated mcuapp, zip provided here https://github.com/tpunix/SAROO/issues/113#issuecomment-2155879856 I can confirm that it works. The SD Card did NOT get corrupted after powering off and back on after loading into the new zone.

Thankyou @tpunix for all your hard work

What about alphabetical sorting? Firmware v0.5 doesn't seem to offer this, the games inside of my ISO folder are displayed in Saroo in random order. Also the backgrund music feature doesn't seem to work correctly. I've converted my music files to PCM 16bit, 44.1kHz, Stereo, little endian, but Saroo refuses to play them (i only get scratch noise).

Let's address the sorting which is there if you read the patch notes which tells you that you need to add the following to the config file image For ex: sort_mode = 1

Now as far as the background sound here are some premade ones that I have tested and they all work https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2024/05/16/new-saroo-firmware-update-brings-big-changes/

Lunar.zip Lunar Background & Music @MrAsh5 - So I just made this one myself and tested it and it works.

MrAsh5 commented 3 weeks ago

Thanks to the various answers here I was able to solve all my problems and my SAROO now works as desired, even my own background music now works.

BUT!

Why are such trivial (and important) things like exFAT formatting (not FAT32!), English as default language, alphabetical sorting and 4M memory extension not active by default?

As I have seen for myself, the software as it is currently offered by default causes problems for many people, which would be largely eliminated with the “default settings” mentioned above.

It would also be helpful if you could make these settings directly in the Saroo menu without having to edit the saroocfg.txt via PC.

I don't know what you mean by 4M memory extension not active by default.

However, since it is manufactured and imported from China, I can only assume that the language would default to Chinese.

Formatting in ExFat was a workaround for Firm v0.5 as all the reporters of SD Corruption have been formatted in Fat32. Though this seems not to be an issue with the firmware no longer provided here https://github.com/tpunix/SAROO/issues/113#issuecomment-2156044115

Fat32 can't handle 4g files or larger not that there are any games of that size though a third-party program is required to format SD Cards larger than 32gigs so the option of exFat is available.

exFat is also faster than Fat32 in reading and writing data. Overall it provides better performance

Since Saroo offers the option for exfat, it's my recommendation to use that over Fat32.

Hope this helps and answers any questions.

Hello All, My saves keep being deleted or overwritten on the SD card after playing Princess Crown or Guardian Heroes (Japanese versions). It doesn't happen every time I turn off the Saturn and turn it on, maybe every 3-5 times. SD card came default as exFat 116gb from Aliexpress. Anything I can try to prevent this from happening? The first time the saves were erased was after playing about 6 hours of princess crown, then stopping for a bit and coming back, the Saturn wouldn't recognize the card anymore. Then I upgraded the firmware to the latest version and the Saturn recognized the SD card and I was able to play again. I then played about 9 hours of Princess crown and saved and quit. During both of these times I think I played Guardian Heroes with my wife for about an hour, so the problem could be stemming from that game, but I am not sure. My Saroo is the latest blue one from Ali Express, came with the 116gb card formatted to exFat and sent to me in Japan, so all my games are the Japanese versions. I think after the saves are erased or overwritten, the SS MEMS.BIN and SS SAVE.BIN get created over and over in the root folder. I have attached a picture of it. Any help will be appreciated. (I'm really liking Princess Crown but having to start over and over again stinks)

Please, help needed. I had my card corrupted today after I reset the console (I did not use the A+B+C+Start commands). I tried to reformat the card and put the files back on it. I used the firmware from the post https://github.com/tpunix/SAROO/issues/113#issuecomment-2156044115 and after that my Saroo won’t boot anymore. It stays with the green light on and the red one blinking. I’ve tried several different cards and two Saturn models that I have here and nothing. Is my Saroo bricked?

Thanks a lot. I have been testing for the past few days when I have time. I've been mostly playing Princess Crown, but have played Guardian Heroes as well. One thing to note for Guardian Heroes is that when you boot the game you have the option to choose to save to the system or to the cart. The first time I think I chose save to the cart, and I am thinking that is the reason why the save files on the saroo were erased. This time I chose save to the console and the save files on the saroo weren't erased. I will continue to update this chat with my findings.

I'm truly sorry... I'd be sick, too. I agree, I think many of the sellers are doing a haphazard work. I've been trying to identify one that does quality work. I'm probably just going to begin stocking them myself so I can do quick replacements if a customer has issues. More on that later.

I have seen videos with issues with fenrir and Saroo working together. If you have another Saturn i try that or remove fenir. Just curious did you get the elite version or normal.

Guys, I formatted it in exfat and it doesn't recognize it, what should I do? In fat32, it only corrupts files when I restart by holding down Start+A+B+C Captura de Tela (698) 00 01
