Hi @ftrebien thanks for the suggestion. I'll test some different styles for this.
I think using sand like pattern can represent the unpaved way and is visible from z15.
I would prefer something a little bolder, but this solution is okay, it’s similar to what OSM Carto uses, though I often find it hard to spot. OSM Carto also shows unpaved trunk ways at zoom level 8; it’s subtle, but at least represented.
It would be very useful to know at a glance which roads are unpaved, especially the more local ones, such as highway=unclassified, highway=residential, and highway=service (and depending on the area of the globe, it might also be useful for unpaved highway=tertiary and highway=secondary). This is especially useful when nearby roads of the same type are paved and others are not. It might be enough to simply make the unpaved ones a bit darker, for example by changing their color from white to light gray.
