I'm not sure this sentence is clearly representing the previous work by Abrams:
"Several ways of computing competition coefficients have been proposed \citep[e.g.,][]{Abrams-1987,Abrams-2008}, but most are restricted to multi-species communities and thus of limited use for current purposes."
Below I quickly sum up these two papers and I don't really understand what we want to say with "multi-species communities" for these papers (and anyway I don't understand what it would be "of limited use for current purposes" because we work with only two species ?).
I would rather propose to change the sentence as follow:
"Several ways of computing competition coefficients have been proposed \citep[e.g.,][]{Abrams-1987,Abrams-2008}, but most were focused on testing the assumption of linearity and constancy of competition parameters and not on the shape of the competition kernels in relation to traits."
Abrams 1987 TPB
essential resources based on Leon and Tumpson 1975
Two resources
Species consume all resource available as in Tilman 1977 Species 1 consumption of resource 1 is not limited by it more limiting resource (no min in the resource equations 1c and 1d below)
resource dynamics occurs at a significantly smaller time scale than that of consumers
This paper analyses the assumption of constancy and linearity of the competition parameters
Abrams 2008 assumptions
Resources are distributed along a one dimension axis
Resources are substitutable
resource dynamics occurs at a significantly smaller time scale than that of consumers
This paper shows that the linearity of competition effect in respect to density is not always true
