Not sure, but I think desktop git will add .git to the end of the repo, if the user doesn't specify.
Since the copy clone url on github doesn't really work well in mobile safari, it is easier to copy addressbar url, which then needs .git appended.
Are there any git servers where adding .git is the wrong thing to do in this case?
