I know about this project, but i have few reasons why i don't use this
Linguist it's opensource project and its source code hosted on most popular platform for opensource code - on github. Any people who want to improve Linguist, may send pull request with fix or send a bug report, i will review it and care about apply it to improve Linguist. All that people needs is github account (some people also write me email sometime).
Github is all-in-one place to explore the code, docs and communicate with all contributors. I don't want to complicate process of contributing and split code between few services. I don't see how it may help to translate the linguist.
I think that contributing must be trivial process and we must respect time of contributors and never force them to create accounts to additional services to contribute.
Besides, this service is not free after 60.000 words, so it's useless service for our case, because i can find and pay directly to native speakers on other languages, to get translation.
Also, i heard that crowdin suboptimal pipeline which require manual export texts, but i'm sure that all work which may be automatize must be automatize.
This is my opinion about it. If you can break my delusions, feel free to do it here

I'm happy with Weblate. Every translation (of ~9 languages) I've got (except one) was made on that service. And yes, you can make changes both directly through git and through Weblate no problem (as I stated in my README), because it works on top of VCS (git). So I'd say there are no big drawbacks to using it.
I have a question as to why don't you use Crowdin for translation languages. https://crowdin.com/projects
