Cannot delete text inside a tag without deleting the tag

If I've got:

<1|<2|This is>> my text.

then if I select just "This is" and try to type, the <2| > tag is also removed. Similarly, if I put the cursor just after "is" and backspace, at the point of deleting "T", the <2| > tag is removed.
