Question: Does this require Java to run? #7

For the Windows and Linux version do I need to install Java to make this work, or will it work out of the box?

Java is required. The windows and Debian installer will try to install Java if not detected. There is a problem with the Debian installer as it installs openjdk Wich does not work. You have to have Oracle's version.
