This is not a problem with the current version, it is a feature request. 

I would like to see the ability to preview the RSS feed from the WebGUI for
the RSS Extension. For example, I have attached a screenshot of what
Automatic (on my Mac) does... 

This would be nice so that you can see what your feed is bringing back and
how your filters are affecting what the feed is returning.

Issue 6 has been merged into this issue.

Would need to reorganize code in rss_cron.php and move some of into the global
rss_functions.php.  That plus AJAX should allow something like this to be 
possible. 
Might make writing filters easier too.

Has there been any progress made on this front or any additional thought put 
into this?

Automatic (Mac OSX) has also added some nice functionality recently, you could 
get
some nice ideas by looking at his release notes and change logs!!
