Easiest solution is to simply include only a subset of vignettes in CRAN version (while Github version and {pkgdown} vignette are not limited). Create a .Rbuildignore_CRAN file that excludes enough vignettes and when building CRAN release add those lines to .Rbuildignore and then git restore .Rbuildignore to undo
Could devote more energy to image file sizes.
{ragg} generates pretty small png images
For some geometry images perhaps {svglite} with "gzip" compressed svg files would be smaller
