I would actually make a Google Spreadsheet rather than an Excel file. Will be easier to review, work collaboratively (only one version), leave comments, data validation is still possible...

And we can still provide it as a template to others: people have the option to download it as Excel if they want (and we could check if data validation is copied).

Reading a Google Spreadsheet in R should be possible too...

I suggest to create this BEFORE we go further with reviewing.

This should vignette should help.

Unfortunately, it seems you need to:

Add the sheet to your drive (not such a problem, but it requires a google account)
Login via prompt in the browser (triggered from the code): not sure how this will work when rendering the site or knitting.

@LienReyserhove Anyway, would be good to test this approach, maybe first in a separate get_gs_data.Rmd file.
