There are currently 395 names considered synonyms by GBIF. We need to verify if the proposed accepted name is correct. I already verified some using this procedure. Current stats (updated on 2016-08-11):

69 ok: SYNONYM author variation: only difference between synonym and accepted name is the author
50 ok: SYNONYM listed: the accepted name is listed as a synonym in a source dataset (e.g. in plants)
8 ok: SYNONYM verified: asked/looked for info and synonymy was verified (e.g. see below)
268 verify: SYNONYM: requires verification

Aster novi-belgii → Symphyotrichum novi-belgii (L.) G.L.Nesom: verified with http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/gcc-52496 + listed EN name matches + is in plants
Conyza canadensis → Erigeron canadensis: verified with http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/gcc-90828 + listed EN name matches + is in plants
Fallopia x bohemica → Reynoutria bohemica J. Chrtek & A. Chrtková: verified with http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2807629 + listed FR name matches + is in plants
Humulus japonicus → Humulopsis scandens (Lour.) I.A. Grudzinskaya: verified with http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2855038 + listed NL name matches + is in plants
Aspius aspius → Leuciscus aspius (Linnaeus, 1758): verified with Hugo

Incorrect

Ambrosia artemisiifolia is accepted (http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/gcc-20460) and should match http://www.gbif.org/species/8002952 (see https://github.com/gbif/checklistbank/issues/8)

Closing issue, project is archived. If issue is still relevant, submit to the actively maintained TrIAS unified checklist. Note: synonym verification is done there as well.
