New habitat information #61

Open peterdesmet opened 4 years ago

peterdesmet commented 4 years ago

Examine what habitat information is requested by GRIIS:

For e.g. all Fungi, Viruses, Hemiptera are listed as 'Host'. For Marine and Fish we are using WoRMS and Fishbase to assign the habitat type. Would you have any objection to post the list with the reassigned habitat. We can highlight the changes for you.

These are the taxa for which the habitat is updated: updated_habitat.txt

As remarked by @timadriaens, Platyhelminthes and Hemiptera are all treated as host by GRIIS, but this is not correct for many species, e.g.:

Bipalium kewense Moseley, 1878: terrestrial worm, not a parasite Caenoplana bicolor (Graff, 1899): terrestrial worm, not a parasite Nysius huttoni White & F.B., 1878: terrestrial hemiptera, not a parasite

Indeed, some habitat notions in there seem incorrect. Nysius hottoni is a terrestrial hemipteran, Coenoplana bicolor and Bipalium kewense are not intestinal parasites but free living terrestrial flatworm. Dendrocoelum romanodanubiale is also a free living freshwater species. It looks like perhaps the "host" habitat has been assigned to entire higher taxa.

Also, we do not consider the habitat "host" in GRIIS Belgium but rather, for the indicators, focus on the environment. So clearly GRIIS and our unified have a rather different interpretation of "habitat".

Perhaps it would be good to discuss this with Shyama to see if we can find common ground.
