nb. Lauren: please do feel free to request specific fixes if you can ID the source of breakage. I would be just as happy not to push broken code. Alternatively, we can create a DEVEL branch and merge to that. Or we can do both. One way or another, it will be good to limit the fallout

Last but not least: one of these days we should set up continuous integration with GitHub Actions. Probably not this day, or this week, or maybe even this month, but ideally before the end of the year.
