Work in progress. Introducing first revision of STS API.

Currently this fails to build, will merge two other branches and pull up changes here.

Builds on OS X and Ubuntu Trusty for me, Valgrind doesn't complain. @trink -- in case you'd have time -- take a quick look, I'm going to merge this Monday ~noon.
