I could finally motivate myself to work on this code again.
With all the knowledge I acquired in the meantime I could eliminate a lot of code in favour of async/await.
Not requesting a review on this, as it really contains a lot of changes, just wanted to put this here so everyone sees it.
I'll try to create a visual frontent tomorrow, after that and some escaping in the code, and of course, unit tests, this could actually be production-ready already.
Will merge in 12 hours if there aren't any objections on this.
