no good place to ask questions? #56

Maybe I'm blind, but the home page doesn't appear to give a mailing list or
chat channel and Google code hides the email addresses of the developers so
AFAICT there's no good place to ask questions, which is what I'm trying to do,
so here I am submitting an issue since I don't know a better way to do it.

1. Is there any difference in support among the smart nav models? Before I buy
I want to make sure there isn't anything tricky like the 4 being better
supported than the 5.

2. Does the virtual mouse support multiple monitors? If not would this be
challenging for a noob to the code base to add?

Hello,
it is ok, I have no problem answering your questions here...

The SmartNav4, which I think is the only model available (first hand) should be
supported - meaning that it should work just fine. On the other hand, I don't
own the device, so should you encounter a problem, I'm going to need your
cooperation to be able to solve it. That said, the SmartNav4 is support is
there for quite some time now, so I think it is not very probable that you
encounter problems with the device itself.

As for the multiple monitors, I have no idea - I have just one monitor, so I
can't really test it. If you try it and find a problem with that, just let me
know and I'll try and fix it.

Kind regards,

Michal

Thanks for the info. Is there any functional difference between SmartNAV and
TrackIR? The only into I've turned up is that on Windows track IR lacks a
virtual mouse option, which I don't care about since I'll be using Linux. Maybe
one is more accurate than the other?

Hi,
if we are talking about differences between TrackIR5 and SmartNav4, as far as I
know there are these:

1) SmartNav has more heavy duty construction, detachable cable and maybe better
cooling (the FPGA inside gets quite hot)

2) SmartNav has extra input/inputs for accessories simulating mouse clicks
(sip/puff switch, pedal)

3) SmartNav have so called Grayscale mode, where it behaves more (but not
quite) like a webcam; but under normal circumstances it will just cause
higher CPU usage, without any real benefits

4) SmartNav is way more expensive

As far as the accuracy goes, as far as I know, they share the same image sensor
(640x480), just SmartNav4 upsamples the horizontal, so they report 1280x480
resolution. This might give slightly more accurate tracking in the horizontal
axis, which might give you slight advantage when used as virtual mouse i
absolute mode.

I never had a chance to compare those two head to head, so that is as far as I
can compare them objectively. As far as TrackIR5 goes, it provides very stable
and smooth tracking, and I'm very satisfied with it.

Kind regards,

Michal

Perfect, sounds like TrackIR is the better choice for me. Thanks.
