Is there some reason deciphering functionality prior to installation relies on skimming [sic] the source?

Partly laziness, and the fact that some of the features were side effects of diagnostic mode. The synthetic stripe info isn't quite right for most cards. (Also, yes, I'm aware Coin has obfuscated their app in 1.4+ and to get this to work again will require new hooks).
