The authors suggest that interference between clades could be due to CTL epitopes. While this is one plausible explanation, it could also be due to other forms of cross-reactive immunity such as broadly reactive anti-hemagglutinin antibodies (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21878571, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2860935/) or antibodies against internal proteins (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3597515/).
We have expanded this paragraph to encompasss broadly neutralizing anti-HA antibodies and antibodies to internal proteins and included the above references.
