Point taken! The thinking was most folks are right handed and accessing the website on mobile. And a hamburger icon doesn't necessarily indicate "menu" for simple or disabled users. Also, using text allows the browser to easily translate into the local language, but point taken. The hamburger icon is ubiquitous these days; Maybe do both.
By "simple" I mean users not versed in the patterns of web design across the internet.
Most sites and apps have the 3 line hamburger menu hitbox in the upper left corner. Consider moving it there where end users will naturally look for it. (check out where github has theirs!) (:
