It is fairly common to want to define an approximate date in front matter, i.e. that someone died in "approximately 1200". It is nicer to allow an actual syntax for approximate dates than to use YAML comments because it can make the output more clear and help understand what is canonical or not.
Ideally an approximate date would have:
(a) a syntax for indicating it is approximate
(b) some mechanism for indicating the "range" of the date for age calculations. That is, if a date is approximate to the nearest hundred years, the age should be calculated to the nearest hundred
