Lato Font Rendering Error in Chrome and Firefox

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open browser
2. go to a site with lato installed (for this instance 
https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Lato or 
http://www.latofonts.com/lato-free-fonts/ )
3. view the page rendering poorly

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The font has all of a sudden become very low quality on all sites using it.  It 
seems to happen on all computers in this lab.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Windows 7,  chrome 36.0.1985.143 m, firefox 31.0
