List of simulations on aleph #6

Open JanStreffing opened 1 year ago

During our meeting this morning the request was made for a list of simulations / folder and what their purpose / content is.

tsemmler05 commented 1 year ago

These are the two simulations that are not affected by a bug to our knowledge:

sp1950c: 350 years of constant 1950 forcing (both greenhouse gas and aerosols). Atmosphere: TCO95 Ocean: CORE2 The first 100 years are meant to be spin-up, the remaining 250 years 1950-control (according to an extended HighResMIP protocol). Data can be found under /scratch/awiiccp5/sp1950c/outdata

sp1950f: Same as sp1950c - constant 1950 forcing - except the atmosphere resolution: Atmosphere: TCO159 Ocean: CORE2 Data can be found under /scratch/awiiccp5/sp1950f/outdata

At this stage it looks like the extra resolution in the atmosphere does not give large benefits when coupled to the coarse resolution ocean. Therefore the proposal would be to run the 250-year long historical / future / deep future simulation only for TCO95-CORE2 for the coarse resolution case.

For the high-resolution and extremely high-resolution, simulations with TCO319-DART and TCO1279-DART are planned - the latter resolution probably only for interesting time slices from TCO319-DART. Once data are available, these simulations will be added to this list.

Two 100-year simulations: a1850g1950tco95: constant 1850 aerosol forcing and 1950 greenhouse gas forcing for TCO95-CORE2 a2005g1950tco95: constant 2005 aerosol forcing and 1950 greenhouse gas forcing for TCO95-CORE2 Data will be available under /scratch/awiiccp5/a1850g1950tco95/outdata and /scratch/awiiccp5/a2005g1950tco95/outdata

Ongoing spin-up / control simulation for 350 years TCO319-DART: ctl1950d: constant 1950 greenhouse gas and aerosol forcing, initialized from a one-year coupled spin-up simulation Data will be available under /scratch/awiiccp5/ctl1950d/outdata

It should be noted that these simulations are still run with 1950 greenhouse gas concentrations, but 2005 aerosol concentrations. Therefore, unfortunately they are not directly comparable to the high resolution TCO319-DART simulation ctl1950d. sp1950c has been extended to a length of 2000 years.

hi1950d: Branched off from ctl1950d after 100 years of spin-up. TCO319-DART. Running with transient historical greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations from 1950 - 2014. SSP585 from 2015-2100. Constant 2100 concentrations from 2101-2200. Data available under /scratch/awiiccp5/hi1950d/outdata

sp1950f removed due to space restrictions and since the TCO159 resolution hardly gave benefits over the TCO95 resolution used in sp1950c.

There are two more aerosol simulations that can be directly compared to a1850g1950tco95 and a2005g1950tco95: mac1850g1950 and mac2005g1950. a1850g1950tco95 and a2005g1950tco95 are constant aerosol and greenhouse gas forcing experiments according to method 1 in https://github.com/AWI-ESM/project_management/issues/125, mac1850g1950 and mac2005g1950 according to method 2 in https://github.com/AWI-ESM/project_management/issues/125.

ssp585d branched off from hi1950d at the end of 2014. This simulation follows the SSP585 scenario and will be run from 2015 to 2200. According to this scenario, from 2100 to 2200 CO2 concentrations are still increasing from 1135 ppm in 2100 to 2108 ppm in 2200. The aerosol concentrations follow the scaling approach method 1 in https://github.com/AWI-ESM/project_management/issues/125 from 2015 to 2085 according to the RCP8.5 scenario, and remain at 2085 levels after that. Question is if we really want to increase greenhouse gas concentrations after 2100 or want to let them be constant after 2100 as proposed in the collaboration meeting in Vienna.

Data of ssp585d will be available under /scratch/awiiccp5/ssp585d/outdata

To investigate if the sudden Southern Ocean sea ice decline in the 2030s of the ssp585d simulation also occurs under slightly different conditions, c2020d is branched off from ssp585d at the end of 2019. This simulation is run with constant 2020 greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations. Data can be found here: /scratch/awiiccp5/c2020d/outdata.
