First-pass at new intro narrative #421

Here's a draft of an introductory paragraph, with a new narrative angle, trying to tease apart the different concepts. We'd need to make a few more changes elsewhere and to reparagraph the introduction, so leaving it like this for now to see what people think.

OK, I think this is as clear as I can make it. Will need some refinement if other authors like it, but good enough to discuss now so going to merge and sync with overleaf.
