Design a way to clear the tmp directory #30

It gets full of a LOT of files when previewing. I suspect most of them can be deleted without harm. We do however want to see if we can avoid deleted actual history files.

maybe store preview files in different directories: they can be cleared once they're a day old or an hour old. non previews maybe once they're a month old...
